In 2015, we made history with the launch of a limited edition, rare single cask single malt whisky that showcased the bold whiskies crafted at The James Sedgwick Distillery in Wellington. We opened our first-ever Master’s Collection live, online sale to sell 400 of only 800 bottles of this rare whisky, and sold out in under 5 hours. The decision to produce only one cask of this exceptional finish has turned this whisky into a coveted collector’s item.

THE COMPONENTS

Andy experimented with various casks for a few years before selecting the Pedro Ximénez (PX) for the particular effect it has on whiskies with a presence of smoke and peat. Pedro Ximénez is a white Spanish wine grape varietal used for the production of a sweet-style sherry. The raisiny richness it imparts to the cask was the perfect finishing touch to complement the smokiness of our single malt with some sweet, nutty flavours.

WHISKY SENSES

The Three Ships Whisky 10 Year Old Single Malt Single Cask PX Finish is complex with delicate sweet notes from the sherry cask, which lifts the nose with prunes, dates, figs, and fruitcake, and combines effortlessly with the elegant smokiness of the malt. Presented in its purest form, the whisky is unchillfiltered, natural in colour and bottled at 46.2% alcohol by volume to enhance the complexity and flavours of this elegant malt.

Three Ships Whisky 10 Year Old Single Malt Single Cask PX Finish was named Best South African Single Cask Single Malt at the 2016 World Whiskies Awards. Furthermore, the live, online Master’s Collection sale of this whisky first received a Best User Experience award at the annual Webby Awards 2016.

Cereal grains (in this case barley) that have been steeped, germinated and dried before being milled for whisky making.

CASK

Distilled in 2005, the whisky was initially matured for 8 years and 10 months in American oak where after a small quantity was selected to spend a further 14 months in a cask in which PX sherry had previously been matured.

COLOUR

Light amber.

NOSE

Complex with delicate sweet notes from the sherry cask which lifts the nose with prunes, dates, figs and fruit cake and combines effortlessly with the elegant smokiness of the malt.

PALATE

The flavours unravel slowly to reveal smoke, pepper, roasted malt and fruit.

FINISH

Lingers impressively long and the sweet notes mingle comfortably with the peaty finish.
